Epic - Cancon 2018 List Breakdown

Cancon lists 2018 - Can you smell the cheese?

Well, it's that time again, time to see what varieties of craziness and filth have turned up for Cancon this year. I'm sorry to say that I don't foresee any great controversies this year, our TO Kendall Williams (actual photo Left) has done a great job using our DBAD (Don't be a Dick) comp system to keep the OTT lists in check which really limits my ability to destroy someone before the day :(

This year I'm going to do a different format where I cut and paste the actual lists in and put commentary after each, it will help build up your scrolling finger, here goes... These are not in any particular order.

Dark Eldar CANCON '17, 3000 POINTS
Dark Eldar Kabal of Pain's Way 2017 (NetEA 2017)
==================================================

KABAL COTERIE [350]
4 Incubi, 1 Archon character, 2 Wyches, 3 Raider, Ravager

KABAL FLOTILLA [375]
6 Ravager, Dracon

KABAL FLOTILLA [375]
6 Ravager, Dracon

KABAL SYNDICATE [275]
6 Warriors, 2 Scourges, 3 Raider

MANDRAKES [200]
6 Mandrakes

HEAVY BARGE [250]
1 Vessel of Pain

HEAVY BARGE [250]
1 Vessel of Pain

TORMENTOR [500]
1 Tormentor Titan

RAZORWING FIGHTERS [200]
2 Razorwing

VOIDRAVEN BOMBERS [225]
2 Voidravens

First off the bat looks to be some Dark Eldar. Let me be the first to admit my own ignorance to this list, I’ve had a few experiences but generally it all theory hammer to me, if you’ve got some good ideas feel free to let me know!
What I do know though is that DE toys are really good so the first things I’m looking for are how many Vessels of Pain and how many tormentor titans are around because the TK death coming off those will shred you. In this case the army has a nice spread of units and a most friendly 10 activations. It’s a tough army to play well but it seems to have a solid range of tactical options.

Dark Eldar CANCON '18 List 2, 3000 POINTS
Dark Eldar Kabal of Pain's Way 2017 (NetEA 2017)
==================================================

KABAL COTERIE [325]
4 Incubi, 1 Archon character, 2 Incubi, 3 Raider

WEBWAY PORTAL [50]

PORTABLE WEBWAY PORTAL [50]

KABAL SYNDICATE [250]
6 Warriors, Dracon

KABAL SYNDICATE [200]
6 Warriors

SCOURGES [250]
6 Scourges

HEAVY BARGE [250]
1 Vessel of Pain

HEAVY BARGE [250]
1 Vessel of Pain

WYCH CULT [250]
6 Wyches, Succubus, 3 Raider

WYCH CULT [300]
6 Wyches, Succubus, 3 Raider, 2 Warp Beasts

SLAVEBRINGER [200]

SLAVEBRINGER [200]

RAZORWING FIGHTERS [200]
2 Razorwing

VOIDRAVEN BOMBERS [225]
2 Voidravens

List two is another Dark Eldar but clearly with a more aggressive take. You can tell this list won’t be subtle, if anything between planetfalling heavy transports and multiple webway portals this list just screams shenanigans. I’d be assuming some softening of targets by the fighters and bombers before some heavy air assault comes flying in to destroy the unwary, that usually ends one of two very dramatic ways. The guy who wrote this clears has balls of solid brass.

Biel-Tan Eldar CANCON '18 List 1, 3000 POINTS
Biel-Tan Craftworld (Biel-Tan Craftworld (v4.2))
==================================================

ASPECT WARRIOR WARHOST [400]
Autarch, Exarch, 8 Shining Spear

ASPECT WARRIOR WARHOST [350]
2 Exarch, 8 Swooping Hawk

ASPECT WARRIOR WARHOST [350]
2 Exarch, 8 Swooping Hawk

RANGER TROUPE [150]
6 Ranger

WAR WALKER TROUPE [200]
6 War Walker

WAR WALKER TROUPE [200]
6 War Walker

WINDRIDER TROUPE [200]
6 Vyper

WINDRIDER TROUPE [200]
6 Vyper

NIGHTWINGS [300]
3 Nightwing Interceptors

PHOENIX BOMBERS [325]
3 Phoenix Bombers

PHOENIX BOMBERS [325]
3 Phoenix Bombers

Bile Tan look to be all alone in representing the good(?) Eldar this year. All things considered this is a really soft list compared to what it could be. I applaud the writer for including Vypers and War Walkers that are just never seen and not just going nuts of War Engine artillery and macro snipers. No doubt it still has some teeth, that Air Force is going to bring some pain but clearly a player willing to show restraint when using a list that can be written to be so nasty.

Vraksian Traitors CANCON '18, 2975 POINTS
Vraksian Traitors (NetEA v1.06)
==================================================

REGIMENTAL HQ PLATOON [550]
Supreme Commander, 12 Infantry, Hellhound Squadron (3 Hellhounds), Flak (1 Hydra)

MALCADOR TANK COMPANY [700]
6 Malcador, 4 Malcador Annihilator, Flak (1 Hydra)

TANK HUNTER SQUADRON [200]
3 Leman Russ Destroyer Tank Hunters

TANK HUNTER SQUADRON [200]
3 Leman Russ Destroyer Tank Hunters

HEAVY ARTILLERY SQUADRON [350]
3 Minotaur Artillery Tanks

DEATHSTRIKE MISSILE BATTERY [200]
2 Deathstrike Missile Launchers

ALPHA LEGION RETINUE [325]
8 Alpha Legion Marines, 1 Alpha Legion Lord, 4 Alpha Legion Rhinos

HELLTALON SQUADRON [175]
2 HellTalon FighterBombers

CHAOS WARHOUND TITAN [275]

Vraskian Traitors, surprisingly a list I’m fairly familiar with. You will have to dig hard to find the actual list for this one since the army champ took a vow of CBF about 3 years back. Still it’s a fun little list and the inclusion of things like hellhounds show us that it’s far from super optimised. Watch out for the minoataurs massive barrage and those Malcadors that can garrison right up in your face and you should be fine.

LatD CANCON '18 - List 1, 3000 POINTS
Lost And The Damned - Redux (0.3 - Experimental)
==================================================

COVEN [425]
Daemonic Pact, (Chaos Undivided), 11 Cultists, Daemon Prince (Arch Heretic), Chaos Altar

COVEN [225]
Daemonic Pact, (Chaos Undivided), Demagogue, 11 Cultists

SLAANESH DAEMON KNIGHTS [275]

SLAANESH DAEMON KNIGHTS [275]
4 Daemon Knights

DAEMON POOL [165]
Lesser Daemon, 3 Greater Daemon

TZEENTCH DOOMWINGS [150]
3 Doomwings

TZEENTCH DOOMWINGS [150]
3 Doomwings

SLAANESH SCOUT TITANS [225]
Subjugator

SLAANESH SCOUT TITANS [225]
Subjugator

PLAGUE ZOMBIE INFESTATION [175]
3D6 Plague Zombie Units

COVEN [285]
Daemonic Pact, (Chaos Undivided), Demagogue, 11 Cultists, 6 Land Transporter

HELLFIRE CANNONS [200]
4 Hellfire Cannons

Lost and the damned are a really cool themey little horde of randomness and this one is no different. It’s got plenty of mid range shooting with those Daemon Knights and doom wings and subjugators will shred anything they get into BTB contact with. There’ll be Greater Daemons popping up all over the place too which could be super interesting. Definitely a list defined by its toys.

Red Corsairs CANCON '18 List 1 2295 POINTS
Red Corsairs (3.5 - Approved)
==================================================

HOUNDS SQUADRON [300]
8 Chaos Space Marine Bike units, Sorceror Lord

RENEGADE WARBAND [415]
4 Chaos Space Marine units, 4 Thousand Sons units, Chaos Warlord, 4 Chaos Rhino

RENEGADE WARBAND [375]
Swap the chaos Lord and his unit for a Daemon Prince, 4 Chaos Space Marine units, 4 Khorne Berzerker units

ARMOURED COMPANY [350]
3 Chaos Predator, Chaos Hunter, 2 Chaos Land Raider

CHAOS THUNDERHAWK [200]
1 Chaos Thunderhawk Gunship

CHOSEN [205]
6 Chaos Chosen units, 3 Chaos Rhino

BLOOD SLAUGHTERER PACK [225]
5 Blood Slaughterers

BLOOD SLAUGHTERER PACK [225]
5 Blood Slaughterers

SILVER TOWER CIRCLE [250]
4 Silver Towers

TWO HELL TALON FIGHTER-BOMBERS [225]

TWO HELL TALON FIGHTER-BOMBERS [225]

Red Corsairs are definitely one of my favourite Chaos Marine varieties and this one is well optimised. It has all my favourite toys and tricks in abundance like the tzeench marine unit that’s basically just a fearless blitz guard for your sup com. A thunder hawk worth of berzerkers and daemon prince is going to bring pain and the double bombers and silver towers mean this list won’t be short on fire support. My advise to everyone is to go read what blood slaughters do... don’t be someone who get shocked by the veritable bucket of dice these guys throw, they’ve got one trick but they do it beautifully. Kiss of death for this list as it’s one of my picks for the podium this year.

Death Guard CANCON '18 List 1, 2990 POINTS
Death Guard (NetEA V0.4.2)
==================================================

PLAGUE MARINE RETINUE [415]
Lord of Pestilence (Supreme Commander), 4 Plague Marines, 3 Havocs, 4 Death Guard Rhino

PLAGUE MARINE RETINUE [625]
7 Plague Marines, Plague Tower (uses a Support Formation slot), Nurgle Sorcerer Lord

PLAGUE MARINE RETINUE [325]
4 Plague Marines, 3 Havocs, Nurgle Sorcerer Lord

BLIGHT DRONE SWARM* [250]
5 Blight Drones

DEATH GUARD CHOSEN [200]
4 Plague Marine Chosen, Plague Lord

PLAGUE TOWERS* [350]
Plague Tower

PLAGUE REAPERS [200]
Plague Reaper

PLAGUE REAPERS [200]
Plague Reaper

HELLTALONS* [225]
2 Helltalon Fighter-Bombers

PLAGUE SHIP* [200]

Death guard is a list that I used to follow closely but it’s fallen off my radar due to inactivity. The strength of this list will be seriously impacted by the current power level of its key units. Plague towers are incredibly resilient but tend to be fairly slow and last time I checked they were getting slowed down to 15cm, worth checking in before the day. Beyond that it certainly has all the tools it needs to take on most opponents, it’s going to be a bastard to shift, as it should be.

Feral Orks CANCON '18 List 1, 2325 POINTS
Snagga-Snagga's Feral Orks (NetEA Army Compendium v20120208)
==================================================

WARBAND [425]
2 Nobz, 6 Boyz + (optional)Grotz, 2 Grotz, Orkeosaurus, Wyrdboy, Warlord

WILDBOYZ [350]
2 Nobz, 3 Two Wildboyz Units, Orkeosaurus, Wyrdboy

WILDBOYZ [350]
2 Nobz, 3 Two Wildboyz Units, Orkeosaurus, Wyrdboy

WILDBOYZ [350]
2 Nobz, 3 Two Wildboyz Units, Orkeosaurus, Wyrdboy

WILDBOYZ [350]
2 Nobz, 3 Two Wildboyz Units, Orkeosaurus, Wyrdboy

STEAM GARGANT [500]
3 Steam Gargant

Ah Feral Orks, I’m totally taking credit for putting these guys on the map down under but I couldn’t have done it without the awesome companies who make us such great minis. This list looks like a friendlier version of my CA winning list from a couple of years back and I sense the DBAD rule could be impacting here. 5 orkeosaurus and 3 steam gargants will still be a hell of a lot to move but if people are careful with how they engage against these guys they’ll be just fine. It’s all about focusing on objectives when you play against the orks, killing the entire force is borderline impossible for most armies but they are slow s buggery too

Feral Orks CANCON '18 List 2, 3000 POINTS
Snagga-Snagga's Feral Orks (NetEA Army Compendium v20120208)
==================================================

WILDBOYZ [325]
2 Nobz, 4 Two Wildboyz Units, Orkeosaurus, Warlord

WILDBOYZ [375]
2 Nobz, 3 Two Wildboyz Units, 4 Squiggoth, Wyrdboy

WILDBOYZ [325]
2 Nobz, 3 Two Wildboyz Units, 3 Squiggoth, Wyrdboy

WILDBOYZ [375]
2 Nobz, 4 Two Wildboyz Units, Orkeosaurus, Wyrdboy

WILDBOYZ [300]
2 Nobz, 3 Two Wildboyz Units, Orkeosaurus

BOARBOYZ HORDE (BIG) [175]
10 Boarboyz

JUNKA BRIGADE [175]
Junka Trukks, 6 Boyz + (optional)Grotz

MADBOYZ HORDE [100]
6 Madboyz

STEAM GARGANT [350]
2 Steam Gargant

BOARBOYZ HORDE (BIG) [175]
10 Boarboyz

And two ferals this year, that’s double the ferals ever seen at an Aus tournament! Actually looking at it this list is clearly designed by someone who gives no shits about list design. It’s about as solid as a marshmallow so hopefully this player isn’t too concerned about his win/loss record.

Gargant Mob CANCON '18 List 1, 3000 POINTS
Gargant Bigmob (3.3.1 - Developmental)
==================================================

GREAT GARGANT [825]
2 Soopagun, Soopa Lifta Droppa, (Kustom) Flakka Dakka

GARGANT [625]
3 Soopagun

GARGANT [625]
3 Soopagun

GARGANT [625]
2 Soopagun, Soopa Zzap Gun

LOOTA WARBAND (NORMAL) [150]
6 Boyz, 2 Grotz, Killa Kan

SPACECRAFT [150]
KillKrooza

Gargants eh, not much to say. It’s not a subtle list at all, either you can do something to it in which case it’s a game or you can’t in which case it’s a one sided snore fest for the opponent. Matchup will have the biggest influence in how this list goes this weekend.

Tyranid CANCON '18 List 1, 2995 POINTS
Tyranids (Tournament Pack 2016-01-21)
==================================================

TYRANID SWARM [475]
6 Termagants, Dominatrix, Symbiote

TYRANID SWARM [495]
6 Termagants, 2x Tyranid Warriors, Tyranid Warriors, Zoanthrope, 6 Hormagaunts, 2 Haruspex

TYRANID SWARM [400]

EXOCRINE SWARM [175]
3 Exocrine

GENESTEALER SWARM [150]
6 Geanstealers

LICTOR SWARM [150]
3 Lictors

Tyranids are another one we just don’t see much in Aus and using the NETEA version rather than EpicUK is almost unheard of. It’s got an interesting array of units and I’m sure it will look cool. Don’t know how well its going to do though because nothing obviously stands out as a hammer unit.

Necrons CANCON '18 List 1, 3000 POINTS
Necrons (NetEA Tournament Pack 2013)
==================================================

INFANTRY PHALANX [425]
Necron Lord, 6 Warriors, Immortals, 2 Tomb Spyders, Pariahs

MONOLITH PHALANX [275]
3 Monoliths

MONOLITH PHALANX [275]
3 Monoliths

MONOLITH PHALANX [275]
3 Monoliths

Necrons – Well that’s my list, if you want to know how it works go back over the Necron bat reps I’ve posted and check it out there! Beyond that wait and see, I’m not sure how many it will win but I guarantee you the battles will be dramatic. It’s very different to my previous builds which usually operate through activation padders followed by a big hit unit of some sort late in the turn, this one will be fully engaged from the beginning of the turn.

Knight Crusade CANCON '18 List 1, 2965 POINTS
Knight Crusade (NetEA v1.0 *UNDER DEVELOPMENT*)
==================================================

KNIGHT HOUSEHOLD [590]
4 Knight Paladin, Baron

KNIGHT HOUSEHOLD [435]
2 Knight Paladin, 2 Knight Errant, Seneschal

KNIGHT HOUSEHOLD [325]
3 Knight Paladin, Seneschal

CUSTODIAN HOUSEHOLD [515]
4 Knight Castellan, Seneschal

SENTINEL SQUADRON [125]
4 Sentinels

THUNDERBOLT SQUADRON [150]
2 Thunderbolt Fighters

WARLORD [825]
1 Warlord Class Titan

Holy hell that's a heap of firepower. I've never seen a list built like this one and I'm super keen to see how it goes. In a high activation meta I could see it struggling but that's not what we have this year so who knows. A warlord BTS is almost unkillable which certainly gives the rest of the army more breathing room but who knows if the battlecannon toting firepower of this build will balance out the more traditional engage focus of knights. One to watch.

Knight World CANCON '18 List 1, 2975 POINTS
Knight World (NetEA v2.2.2 *APPROVED*)
==================================================

KNIGHT HOUSEHOLD [500]

AA GUN BATTERY [125]
3 AA Guns, 3 Gun Transporters

AA GUN BATTERY [125]
3 AA Guns, 3 Gun Transporters

KNIGHT HOUSEHOLD [330]
3 Knight Errant

Knights are always a fantastic looking army on the table and tough as nails if you don’t take advantage of the weaknesses in their shield tech. This ones got plenty of battle cannons and some choppy Errants but enough softer options that the player clearly isn’t trying to go over the top. Should do ok against the unwary.

Space Marines CANCON '18 List 1, 3000 POINTS
Codex Astartes (NetEA Tournament Pack 2015)
==================================================

TACTICAL [550]
6 Tacticals, Supreme Commander, Hunter, 2 Vindicator, Rhinos

2 Annihilator, 2 Destructor

THUNDERHAWK [200]

REAVER [650]
1 Reaver Class Titan

THUNDERBOLT SQUADRON [175]
2 Thunderbolt Fighters

Codex marines are always an interesting force. Their apparent strength in paper rarely translates into their strength in game because is much is determined by the skill of the player. Marines will never be a point and click type of army. This one is hard to call, it has some of the traditional good choices like the Hunter blitz guard and the chaplain terminators but then some traditionally weak choices like vindicators. The reaver is an interesting addition and will bring some much needed fire support but at the cost of limiting the list to 9 activations which I think will be hard to overcome.

Space Marines CANCON '18 List 2, 3000 POINTS

THUNDERBOLT SQUADRON [175]
2 Thunderbolt Fighters

THUNDERBOLT SQUADRON [175]
2 Thunderbolt Fighters

This is another interesting marine list that reminds me of the earlier Dark Eldar list because it’s screams engagement at you from across the table. My only question will be what’s going into all the transports, to me the assault focussed transports don’t seem to correlate with the troops that he has to put in them, would have expected double termies at least. Should be interesting to see how it plays.

Space Marines CANCON '18 List 3, 3000 POINTS
Codex Astartes (NetEA Tournament Pack 2015)
==================================================

TACTICAL [475]

6 Tacticals, Librarian, Dreadnought

SCOUT [150]
4 Scouts, Rhinos

1 Warhound Class Titan

WARHOUND [275]
1 Warhound Class Titan

THUNDERHAWK [200]

MARAUDER SQUADRON [250]
2 Maurader bombers

Looks like all the loyalists this year are just trying to mess with the formulae. Again we have some of the options that make marines great with the flexibility of land speeders, the hittiness of terminators in a thunderhawk and the flexibility of double war hounds but then there is that dreadnaught which is about as useful as tits on a bull and a set of marauders that suggest this player hasn’t heard the news that thunderbolts are way better.

TERMINATOR [400]
4 Terminators, Chaplain

THUNDERBOLT SQUADRON [175]
2 Thunderbolt Fighters

WARHOUND PACK [500]
2 Warhound Class Titans

Argh, another one, just as weird as the rest. Blitz guard, check, speeders, thunderbolts, termies, check. Warhound Pack! So close yet so far. And whirlwinds too! Say what you like about the marine players this year, at least they are giving everything a go, literally. It’s like they only had one full marine army between them so they had to share it out and include some crap stuff to fill the points. Or maybe they just didn’t read my article about how to build an effective marine force. Good luck marines.

Minervan Tank Legion CANCON '18 List 1, 3000 POINTS

3 Salamanders, Salamander Command Vehicle

ARTILLERY BATTERY [250]
3 Basilisks

ARTILLERY BATTERY [250]
3 Basilisks

WARHOUND [275]
1 Warhound Class Titan

Minervans, this one looks familiar, think we saw it last year. It’s a brutal twist on traditional minervans with all the super heavies and seems to have all its bases covered in terms of AA, artillery and just firepower in general. Still suffers though from the usual issues like a general lack of speed and strangely enough I look at it and wonder if he brought enough shadow swords to take on what I think will be an inevitable titan match at some point. Some armies will have the tools to fight this, others will just need to take out the fast bits and then bunker down and hope they go away. Definitely a podium contender.

Up to 50cm trenches, 50cm razor wire, plus 6 Gun Emplacements.

MARAUDER BOMBERS [250]
2 Marauders

THUNDERBOLT FIGHTERS [150]
2 Thunderbolts

Baran Siege take the prize for most activations this year with a most impressive 14 overall but will it actually do the damage it needs to. This list certainly has lots of different damage dealers, good engage troops, good shooting troops etc but it’s far from as optimised as Baran could be. It lacks the cheap arty this army is famous for and if those death strikes go down cheap it’s lacking real weapons against RA. That combined with a bane blade and more marauder bombers suggest this one will be getting a rewrite after the comp.

Steel Legion CANCON '18 List 1, 3000 POINTS

WARHOUND TITAN [275]

WARHOUND TITAN [275]

Steel legion, to me, are one of the weakest guard codexs and both of these guard lists illustrate just why. Though they seem to get all the cool stuff like leman Russ companies and super heavies they pay through the nose for giant unwieldy units that usually just don’t hit hard enough. This list has some of the good toys as well of course with the classic pair of warhounds and no shortage of shadowswords with that ever so cute addition of 2 ogryns in case of air assaults. Just can’t believe there is another Baneblade... I mean were these things on sale or something this year? Have they had some amazing rules update I haven’t heard about?

And another one? Is this a TO typo or were these two sitting next to each other during the list writing test?

Imperial fists, the space dwarves of the epic universe. Digging a hole and sitting in it for 10,000 years straight. On paper I think many of the choices in this list will look Wierd. But when you remember that all those infantry come with their own personal bunkers you might just start to realise how damn hard it will be to get them off objectives. Defiantly the list built for a general who doesn’t like the movement phase.

And apparently the bye buster is also giving a good fisting this year. Actually I think this is the stronger of the two fists this year, it has more flexibility. This list clearly has all the sit in a bunker boxes ticked. Even bringing their own portable fortress but the double termies teleporting in will give it more teeth than the previous and there is just a bit more speed there to allow these fists to contest the table. It would be wierd to see bye buster take the podium but on paper it’s a solid list.

Good ol Titans. Same shit, different colour ever year. Looks like plasma blasters are out and volcano cannons are in this year with 4 of the bastards in this list. You can already see how this one will play out. Turn 1 - kill everything that can hurt me. Turn 2 - kill more stuff while slowly advancing. No doubt these titans are well versed in the art of having one toe in area terrain so that it’s counts as -1 to hit, same as the Gargants we saw earlier. Oh and spoiler alert that support missile is going to be the massive barrage variant that auto breaks DC3 war engines and puts out templates like it’s raining baneblades. It’s about as good as Titan lists can get with all the usual strengths and limitations so it will just come down to how good the player behind it is and whether people have ready my foolproof article on how to beat Titans. Never seen titans on a podium before, will this be a first?

And a second Titan list, someone who seriously doesn’t want to lose their BTS but their should totally be a scalping prize for anyone who can take down that warlord. Clearly this guy got the memo about Volcano cannons being great but missed the one about warhound packs being rubbish, or maybe he was just cheap. The one problem this one has compared to the other titan lists is a real lack of speed. That warlord is going to sit on the is basically worth 2vp your opponent just can’t have but it doesn’t leave much for you to contest the other three with. Not many opponents have their bts I’m a bit fat target you can splat with volcano cannons so it’s going to be an asymmetric fight most games for our titan players.

    1. He mentioned a few others for podium. Also i wouldn't worry about the Red Corsairs. Their general is a numpty and has only played one game with them
